At the start of the pandemic, in April 2020, we came up with the idea of Home Concert Club, as a way of both supporting musicians whose livelihoods had collapsed and keeping live music going, with short concerts on Zoom. What  was initially thought of as just a few concerts took off in a way that we couldn’t have possibly imagined.

We held three-weekly concerts all the way through to August 2021, involving 64 musicians, in evening concerts, family concerts and a new talent showcase featuring six young musicians starting out on their careers. We featured a wide range of musical styles, from traditional classical music and jazz to folk and Indian classical sitar, with soloists, duos, trios and quartets. We sometimes had over 150 households joining us online, with audience members from as far afield as Europe, the USA and Australia, and we were featured on the Gramophone magazine website and the Ham and High journal. Generous donations from our audiences allowed us to pay all the musicians a reasonable fee for their work and any extra funds went to Help Musicians UK and their hardship fund.

We took a break in August 2021, to take stock and decide what to do next. Over September, we’ve been watching what’s been happening on the music scene. Musicians are now back performing live in venues and it seems that many are extremely busy, picking up their professional lives again. Audiences are gradually coming back into concert halls and other live venues. Gemma Sharples, who did all our programming for us, is herself performing in concerts once more, and also playing the violin several nights a week in a theatrical show.

So, with some sadness, but a great deal of pride, we have decided not to resume the Home Concert Club series. Should things change in the music scene, we’ll consider starting up again. Any funds remaining from donations will go to Help Musicians UK.

Many thanks to all of you who have supported us in what has been a really rewarding and enjoyable venture.

We're leaving this website online for now as a record of what we achieved with the help of the wonderful musicians who performed for us and everyone who joined our audiences and made donations.
